Area: Learn

Area is the space within a shape. The units of area are the squares of the units of length (that is, if a shape's sides are measured in meters, then the shape's area is measured in square meters).

For a rectangle, simply multiply the two different side lengths (also known as base and height) to find the area.

For example, a rectangle with a base of 4 cm and a height of 3 cm has an area of 4*3 = 12 square centimeters.

The diagram below shows how we could count out the 12 square centimeters.

A square is a very special type of rectangle, so the square formula for area is very similar. Where a rectangle has two different side lengths to multiply together, the sides of a square are all the same.
