Determine Ratios

Ratios: Learn

Ratios tell how one number is related to another number.

A ratio may be written as in colon notation (A:B) or in fraction notation (A/B) or using words ("A to B").

Example: A ratio of 1:5 says that the second number is five times as large as the first.

Example: A ratio of 2:5 says that for every 2 of the first number, there are 5 of the second.

If the two numbers are both known, we can determine a ratio, much like a fraction, simplified to smallest terms. Be sure you keep the numbers in the proper order.

Example: Determine the ratio of 24 to 40.

  • Find the Greatest Common Factor of the two numbers (8)
  • Divide both numbers by the GCF (24/8=3 and 40/8=5)
  • State the ratio in one of the three typical ways (The ratio of 24 to 40 is 3:5 or 3/5 or 3 to 5)
