Find Missing Numbers: Learn
In previous lessons you worked with arithmetic sequences. How to find a missing number in an arithmetic sequence:
- Determine if the order of numbers is ascending (getting larger in value) or descending (becoming smaller in value).
- Find the difference between numbers that are next to each other.
- Use the difference between numbers to find the missing number.
In these lessons we focus on the geometric sequence. How to find a missing number in a geometric sequence:
- Determine if the order of numbers is ascending (getting larger in value) or descending (becoming smaller in value).
- Find the quotient between numbers that are next to each other.
- Use the quotient as a divisor or factor to find the missing number.
Example: Find the missing number: 128, 32, ?, 2
- The order of numbers is descending (going down).
- The quotient between numbers is 128 ÷ 32 = 4
- Since the order is descending divide 32 by 4. The missing number may be 8.
- The missing number is 8 since dividing by 4 results in the last number 2.
