Subtracting Pounds and Ounces
Subtract Pounds and Ounces: Learn
How to subtract pounds and ounces:
-
If the subtracted number of ounces is greater than the original number of ounces,
you can "borrow" 16 ounces from the original number of pounds:
- Reduce the original number of pounds by 1
- Increase the original number of ounces by 16
- Subtract the ounces.
- Subtract the pounds.
Example: Subtract 3 pounds 10 ounces from 6 pounds 8 ounces:
-
Since 10 is greater than 8, we must "borrow" some ounces:
- 6 - 1 = 5 pounds
- 8 + 16 = 24 ounces
- 24 - 10 = 14 ounces
- 5 - 3 = 2 pounds
- Final answer: 2 pounds 10 ounces
