Multiply Fraction by Whole Number
Multiply Fractions: Learn
To multiply a fraction by a whole number:
- Rewrite the whole number as a fraction with 1 as the denominator
- Multiply just like any other fractions
- Simplify the result, but do not convert to a mixed number unless the instructions say to do so
Example: Multiply 2/9 by 3

Just like with ordinary fractions, you can cancel factors before multiplying.
Example: Multiply 2/9 by 3, but first simplify the problem by canceling a factor of 3 out of the 3 and 9.
