Subtracting Tens
Subtracting Tens: Learn
Subtracting tens such as (80 - 20 = 60) is like subtracting quantities of items. In this case 2 tens are subtracted from 8 tens to leave 6 tens. This is similar to 2 oranges being subtracted from 8 oranges to leave 6 oranges.
How to subtract two-digit numbers (for example 80 - 20).
-
Place the first number above the other so the tens' place digits and ones'
place digits are lined up. Draw a line under the bottom number.
8 0 - 2 0 -
Subtract the two ones' place digits. (0 - 0 = 0). Place the zero below the
line in the ones' place column.
8 0 - 2 0 0 -
Subtract the numbers in the tens' place column (8 - 2 = 6) and place the
answer below the line and to the left of the ones' place sum.
8 0 - 2 0 6 0
