Dividing Fractions
Divide Fractions: Learn
To divide a fraction:
- Invert the second fraction (that is, turn over or flip it)
- Multiply just like any other fractions
- Simplify the result, but do not convert to a mixed number unless the instructions say to do so
Inverting a fraction is also known as using its reciprocal.
Example: Divide 2/9 by 3/12

Alternatively, you can cancel factors just before multiplying.
Example: Divide 2/9 by 3/12, but simplify the problem before multiplying, by canceling a factor of 3 out of the 9 and 12.
