Variable Expressions Vocabulary
Variable Expression Vocabulary: Learn
- A mathematical expression is a combination of symbols that can designate numbers (constants), variables, operations, symbols of grouping and other punctuation, all of which could be evaluated to achieve a single value (if the variables were known).
- An equation, on the other hand, is a statement of equality between two expressions. You can recognize them by the equals sign.
- Literal Numerals are letters that stand for specific numbers. The Greek letter π is a literal numeral for the irrational number 3.14159265..., and in most algebraic expressions, the beginning of the alphabet is reserved for literal values (a, b, c, etc)
- A Constant represents a known value in an algebraic expression. For example, in the expression x-y+4, the positive 4 is a constant.
- A Variable is a symbol that represents a changeable or undetermined quantity in an algebraic expression. When we solve for x, x is the variable because its value is unknown until we solve. In the expression x-y+4, both x and y are variables.
- Operations are tasks performed on 1 or more numbers. These include addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, as well as taking an absolute value, raising to an exponent, and evaluating and square root.
- Grouping Symbols include parentheses (), curly brackets {}, or square brackets []. They are used to specify or override the order of operations.
