Area of a Square

Area is the space within a shape. The units of area are the squares of the units of length (that is, if a shape's sides are measured in meters, then the shape's area is measured in square meters).
For a square, simply multiply the side length (or base length) times itself to find the area.
For example, a square with a side length of 4 centimeters has an area of 4*4 = 16 square centimeters.
The diagram below shows how we could count out the 16 square centimeters.

A square is a very special type of rectangle, so the rectangle formula for area is very similar. Where a rectangle has two different side lengths to multiply together, the sides of a square are all the same.
