## Dividing 7-Digit by 3-Digit Numbers

### Dividing: Learn

Dividing a seven digit number by a three digit number (for example, 1365420 ÷ 276) is illustrated below.

Place the divisor (276) before the division bracket and place the dividend (1365420) under it.

276 | 1 | 3 | 6 | 5 | 4 | 2 | 0 |

Since the first 3 digits of the dividend (136) are smaller than our divisor (276), we will consider the first 4 digits (1365). The number 1365 contains four 276's (276*4=1104) but not 5 (276*5=1380). Place the 4 above the division bracket and directly above the 5.

276 | 1 | 3 | 6 | 5 | 4 | 2 | 0 |

Multiply the 4 by 276 and place the result (1104) below the 1365 of the dividend. Draw a line under the 1104 and subtract it from 1365 (1365-1104 = 261). Finally, bring down the next digit from the dividend (4).

Repeat the process, dividing 2614 by 276.

Repeat the process again, dividing 1302 by 276

- | 1 | 1 | 0 | 4 | ||||

1 | 3 | 0 | 2 | |||||

Repeat one last time. Now when the result from the subtraction is less than the divisor, and there are no more digits to bring down from the quotient, we are finished. The 48 left at the end is the remainder. Place it above the division bracket after the letter R.
