How to subtract mixed numbers that have the same denominator:

  • If the second fraction is larger than the first, borrow 1 whole in the first mixed number
  • Subtract the second numerator from the first, and place that difference over the common denominator
  • Subtract the integer portions of the two mixed numbers
  • State the answer
