How to subtract feet and inches:

If the subtracted number of inches is greater than the original number of inches,
you can "borrow" 12 inches from the original number of feet:
 Reduce the original number of feet by 1
 Increase the original number of inches by 12
 Subtract the inches.
 Subtract the feet.
Example: Subtract 3 feet 10 inches from 6 feet 8 inches:

Since 10 is greater than 8, we must "borrow" some inches:
 6  1 = 5 feet
 8 + 12 = 20 inches
 20  10 = 10 inches
 5  3 = 2 feet
 Final answer: 2 feet 10 inches
