Evaluate Exponents
Evaluate Exponents: Learn
An exponent is a number that tells how many times the base number is used as a factor. For example, 34 indicates that the base number 3 is used as a factor 4 times. To determine the value of 34, multiply 3*3*3*3 = 81.
Exponents are written as a superscript number (for example: 34) or preceded by the caret (^) symbol (for example: 3^4).
Here are some special facts and properties about exponents:
- Any number raised to the zero power is 1 (70=1)
- Zero raised to any power (except zero) is zero (05=0)
- One raised to any power is one (15=1)
Property #1 above is a little strange, and you will likely see a proof for it when you are ready for formal algebra. When you see zero raised to the zero power, Property #1 shows the result is actually 1. (00=1)
