### Squaring a Number: Learn

An exponent is a number that tells how many times the base number is used as a factor.
For example, 3^{2} indicates that the base number 3 is used as a factor 2 times.
To determine the value of 3^{2}, multiply 3*3 = 9.

A *square* or *perfect square* can be written as a base with an
exponent that has a value of two. The term *square* comes from the
geometric shape that has the same width and length. To find the area of the
square, you can use the side length as a factor 2 times.

Exponents are written as a superscript number
(for example: 3^{4}) or preceded
by the caret (^) symbol (for example: 3^4).

Here is a list of the first several perfect square numbers:

0^{2} = 0*0 = 0

1^{2} = 1*1 = 1

2^{2} = 2*2 = 4

3^{2} = 3*3 = 9

4^{2} = 4*4 = 16
